Welcome to the Swanage Railway Mercury Group website. Although the site has been in operation in various forms for nearly ten years, we have taken time in 2008 to “re-launch” and I am grateful to Steve Nelson for his help along the way……
It hardly seems nearly four years since I left the British Army, but time flies passed and priorities change. It is therefore with immense pride that I relay that The Army Link continues to flourish. Whether it be the input of 11th Signal Regiment at Blandford raising funds for the annual Poppy Appeal, the Swanage Railway providing a venue for soldiers to learn skills in a civilian environment, or members of the Mercury Group, through Team Herston, supporting young soldiers the result is the same; an interlinked circle of support.
2008 has got off to an excellent start with 19 Herston supporters visiting the Halt during the monthly working weekend in January; closely followed by a 50-strong military exercise in February. As the summer progresses a number of projects are planned, together with a stronger level of support for the Swanage Carnival which runs for eight days as from July 26th. February
2009 will see the twenty-fifth anniversary of the start of military support at Swanage Railway. It is appropriate then that the rebuilding of the platform at Herston Halt has been chosen as a worthy project for soldiers and Railway volunteers. If you have skills and time to spare during the winter 2008/09 please do contact us.
Finally, I hope you will enjoy navigating your way around our website. Suggestions are most welcome, as is your practical support here at Swanage in preparation for which you should visit the Forecast of Events!
Cheekily,
Frank
